【高中·阅读理解·The Language of Maps】
Before satellites, a map was a slow and personal thing. A surveyor walked the land, measured angles by hand, and drew what he had seen. Mistakes were common, and every map carried the character of its maker.
Today a map is data. It is exact to the metre and updated every minute. We trust it so completely that we have stopped looking up from it. People walk into lampposts with their eyes on a screen.
Something has been lost. An old map told you what the mapmaker thought mattered: a bridge, a well, a dangerous bend. It was an argument about the world, not a photograph of it.
Perhaps we should use both. Let the satellite tell us where we are, and let the old map remind us that someone once stood there and decided it was worth drawing.
