【高中·阅读理解·The Quiet Revolution】
In 1978 a librarian in a small American town started a programme that nobody noticed. She placed a box of free books outside the library with a sign: "Take one, leave one."
For years almost nothing happened. Then, slowly, people began to add books. A teacher left a novel; a farmer left a book on bees. Within a decade there were boxes in six towns, and the town newspaper wrote its first article about them.
What is striking is not the number of books. It is that the boxes were never locked and almost never emptied by thieves. People took what they needed and added what they could.
The librarian was asked why she thought it worked. "Because nobody had to ask permission," she said. "When people are trusted, they behave as if they deserve it."
