It was raining hard when school finished. Mary had no umbrella, so she waited under the roof of the school gate.
A girl from another class came up to her. "My home is near. Take this," she said, and put her umbrella into Mary's hands before Mary could answer. Then she ran into the rain.
The next day Mary looked for her everywhere. She found her in the reading room and returned the umbrella. "Thank you," Mary said. "You did not even know my name."
The girl smiled. "You were standing there alone," she said. "That was enough."
