【初中·阅读理解·The Night Market】
The night market opens at six and closes at midnight. Between those hours the quiet street becomes the loudest place in town.
You can smell fried noodles before you see them. Sellers call out prices; children run between the stalls with sticks of fruit. Near the entrance an old man repairs shoes. He has sat in the same corner for thirty years.
I asked him once why he never moved to a bigger shop. He laughed. "People do not come here only to buy things," he said. "They come to be among others. If I left, this corner would be dark, and a dark corner makes a street feel lonely."
I understood then that a market is not only about trade. It is a way for a town to say: we are still here.
