There is a common question: why read books when everything can be found online? The answer is that reading is not only about ______.
Information tells you what is the case. A good book tells you what it is like to be someone else — to be a soldier in a foreign country, a mother who has lost a child, a man who has never left his village. You cannot search for that; you can only live it slowly, page by page.
This is why two people can read the same facts and reach different conclusions: one has read widely, the other has only searched widely.
Reading does not make us cleverer than others. It makes us less certain that we are right — and that, I think, is the beginning of wisdom.
