I missed the last bus home. It was eleven o'clock and the street was almost empty. I had no money for a taxi and my phone was dead.
A shopkeeper was closing his door. He looked at me and asked, "Missed the ______?" I nodded. He went inside and came back with a small lamp and a map. "Walk straight for ten minutes, then turn right. That is the shortest road to the main street. There is a night bus there."
I wanted to thank him properly, but he only said, "Go quickly. Your mother will be worried."
I walked away with the map in my hand. It was not the map that saved me. It was the fact that a stranger cared.
